Called "a jewel of choreographic invention and comic subtlety" by The New Yorker, Doug Elkins conceived Fräulein Maria as a love letter to his young son Liam and daughter Gigi. This sly but affectionate sendup of Rogers and Hammerstein's classic film The Sound of Music, set to the iconic score sung by Julie Andrews, debuted at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater in December 2006 as part of DanceNOW[NYC]’s dancemopolitan series. The work’s pitch-perfect mashup of elements ranging from vogueing and hip hop to Graham technique and ballet wowed audiences and kept them coming back for more.
In September 2008, Elkins was honored with a New York Dance and Performance Award (a “Bessie”) and presented for a third season at Joe’s Pub in December 2008. Becoming a holiday tradition for many New Yorkers, Fräulein Maria was most recently presented in repertory with The Bang Group’s NUT/CRACKED at Dance Theater Workshop in December 2009.
Now at home on a larger stage, Fräulein Maria will continue to delight audiences around the world throughout 2010 and through the spring of 2011.
