René Pape, one of the international leading basses of the younger generation, received his musical education in his native city Dresden. He made his debut while still a student in 1988 at the Berlin State Opera; he has been a member of this company since then. Here René Pape interprets the main roles of his repertoire, so e.g. Rocco, King Marke, King Henry, Pogner, Fasolt, Hunding, Sarastro, Figaro, Leporello (all new productions under Daniel Barenboim) and in May 2002 Don Giovanni/title role (also under Maestro Barenboim), Ramphis under Zubin Mehta, Don Carlos/Philipp II. (2004). From Berlin René Pape developes his impressive career.
René Pape has appeared at all the major opera houses in Europe, Japan (tours with the Metropolitan New York
and with the Berlin State Opera) and the USA (in particular Metropolitan Opera New York, in new productions as e.g. of Tristan und Isolde/King Marke, Fidelio/Rocco, and revivals of Lohengrin/King Henry, Die Meister-singer von Nürnberg/Pogner under James Levine, Parsifal/Gurnemanz under Valerij Gergiev. Lyric Opera of Chicago, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/Pogner under Christian Thielemann, Tristan und Isolde/King Marke under Semyon Bychkov. San Francisco Opera/several productions) and at the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.
Equally at home on the concert platform, René Pape has appeared in all major concert halls all over the world, so in Tokyo, Madrid, London, Florence (Maggio Musicale), New York Philharmonic (Sir Colin Davis/Verdi-Requiem and Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 under Lorin Maazel and Kurt Masur), Chicago Symphony (under
Sir Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim), Orchestre de Paris (Daniel Barenboim and Semyon Bychkov), Philadelphia Orchestra under Wolfgang Sawallisch, Berlin Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian State Opera (under Zubin Mehta), Munich Philharmonic and Boston Symphony under James Levine.
