Alan Buribayev Conductor

Full Biography

Kazakh conductor Alan Buribayev has recently been named as Principal Conductor Designate of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. In 2007 he began his tenure as the Principal Conductor of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, and just a few weeks later, was announced Chief Conductor of The Brabants Philharmonic Orchestra in the Netherlands. Both orchestras invited Alan to take up a role within their organisation after just one day of rehearsal – a true testament to his wonderful musicianship and communication skills.

Previously Alan Buribayev was Generalmusikdirektor of the Meiningen Theatre in Germany. His tenure in Meiningen began in September 2004 and ran until summer 2007. His productions have included Offenbach: Tales of Hoffman, Mozart: Idomeneo and Marriage of Figaro, Janacek: Jenufa, Weber: Der Freischutz and Strauss: Salome, and he also conducted six symphonic programmes per season. Productions in the past season included Max von Schillings Mona Lisa, Verdi Trovatore and Wagner The Flying Dutchman.

Alan recently stepped down from his role as Principal Conductor of the Astana Symphony Orchestra, a group that he worked with extensively. He succeeded in bringing the group to a much higher level, and brought them to perform in Berlin to great acclaim.

Highlights of the 2007-2008 season include debut performances with the Leipzig Gewandhaus, conducting Mussorgsky, Khachaturian and Tchaikovsky. He will also conduct the Bergen Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Sudwestdeutsche Philharmonia, Lucerne Symphony and Nuremberg Philharmonic Orchestras for the first time.

Alan Buribayev works regularly with major orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi Milan, Brabants, Bournemouth Symphony and South Jutland/Sonderjyllands Symphony. Other orchestras he has worked with include the London Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Melbourne Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Gothenburg Symphony, the City of Birmingham Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, Stockholm Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR, Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre de Bretagne, St Petersburg Philharmonic, NDR Symphony-Hamburg, Stuttgart Philarmonic and Sendai Philharmonic. He also conducted a production of Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades at the Opéra National de Lyon.

Alan Buribayev was born in 1979 to a family of musicians; his father is a cellist and conductor and his mother is a pianist. He graduated with honours from the Kazakh State Conservatory as both violinist and conductor, and continued his conducting studies at the University of Music, Vienna with Professor Uros Lajovic.

His victory at the Lovro von Matacic Conducting Competition in Zagreb brought him to international attention and this success led to invitations from several European orchestras. In 2001, he reached the final of the Malko Conducting Competition in Copenhagen in which, where no first prize was awarded, he was awarded a Special Prize, which recognized his “outstanding talent and promise”. Alan Buribayev went on to win First Prize in the Antonio Pedrotti Competition in 2001.
