Baritone Haijing Fu, who has been described by the Detroit Free Press as possessing “urgency as well as nuance, warmth as well as heft, and...an exquisite sense of line to his phrasing,” makes his Santa Fe Opera debut in summer 2007 reprising the role of Seikyo in Tan Dun’s Tea, a part that he created and has performed in Tokyo, Amsterdam, and in Lyon. Earlier this season, Mr. Fu created another role for Tan Dun, the Chief Minister, in the Metropolitan Opera’s world premiere presentation of The First Emperor, directed and conceived by China’s leading film director, Zhang Yimou. During recent seasons, he has joined the Metropolitan Opera for productions of Il Trovatore, La Traviata, and Turandot, and has made his San Francisco Opera debut in the role of Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore.
