Matthias Goerne Baritone

Matthias Goerne has received worldwide praise for his warm, fluid baritone and his profound artistry. Highly respected as a Lieder singer, he is a frequent guest at most prestigious venues like the New York Carnegie Hall and London Wigmore Hall, and renowned pianists such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Leif-Ove Andsnes, Alfred Brendel, and Elisabeth Leonskaja are among his musical partners.

In 2007-08 he can be heard in concert with major orchestras and conductors all over the world, including the Tokyo Philharmonic, Orchester der Oper Zürich, Orchestre National de Lyon, Münchener Kammerorchester, Camerata Salzburg, NDR Sinfonieorchester in Hamburg under the baton of Christoph von Donányi, Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester in Berlin with Ingo Metzmacher conducting, the New York Philharmonic with Kurt Mazur conducting, the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach , the Czech Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas conducting. Stops on his many recital tours this season include Tokyo, Paris, Hamburg, Graz, Bilbao, Venice, Siena, Genoa, Berlin, Strasbourg, Prague, San Francisco, and London. On the opera stage he most recently appeared as Wolfram in a Paris Opera production of Tannhäuse under Seiji Ozawa, as well as Orest in Strauss’ Elektra in Florence and Papageno in The Magic Flute in concert performances at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Also increasingly sought-after as an opera performer, Matthias Goerne has appeared at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (“Wozzeck” under Antonio Pappano), Salzburg Festival, Saito Kinen Festival, Dresden Semperoper, Teatro Real Madrid, Opernhaus Zuerich, and the Met in New York.

Matthias Goerne has an exclusive contract with Decca for solo recordings many of which received prestigious awards. His recordings of Schubert’s “Wintereise” and “Schwanengesang” with Alfred Brendel have recently been released.

In 2001 Goerne was appointed as Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music and Professor for Lied Interpretation at the Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf.
