The RLPO gives over sixty concerts from September to June in Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall and presents concerts throughout the UK. The Orchestra has recently toured to the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, where it will appear again at the Prague Autumn Festival in 2005. In 1998 the Orchestra launched its own recording label, RLPO Live; recordings also appear on the Classico, EMI and Virgin Classics labels. See www.liverpoolphil.com and www.rlpo-live.com.
Members of the RLPO are involved in a number of innovative community education projects including the Phil Power! family concerts. The Merseyside Youth Orchestra, whose most famous ‘old boy’ is Sir Simon Rattle, also enjoys close links with the RLPO. Ensemble 10/10 is the RLPO’s exciting new music group.
One of the oldest concert-giving organisations in the world, the RLPO dates back to 1840. In 1957 it acquired the title ‘Royal’, and in 1991 it was the first organisation to be granted the freedom of the City of Liverpool. Gerard Schwarz was appointed Music Director in 2001; previous Principal Conductors include Max Bruch, Sir Charles Hallé and Sir Charles Groves.
