The Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra - known in Russia as the State Symphony Capella of Russia - was founded in 1991 as a result of a merge of the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR Ministry of Culture lead by Gennady Rozhdestvensky and the USSR State Chamber Choir under Valeri Polyansky.
The orchestra and choir which make up Poliansky's State Symphony Capella enjoy creative autonomy from one another, giving concerts, making recordings and touring independently. However together, the Capella is able to perform some of the greatest works in all of classical music. Capella's performances have included masterpieces such as masses by Mozart, Schubert, the Requiems of Verdi, Cherubini, Brahms, Dvorak, Britten, and Schnittke, Rachmaninov's "Bells", Stravinsky's "Wedding", and many operas in concert performance etc. A large number of works have been revived by Poliansky after they had fallen into obscurity, giving the public the opportunity to become acquainted with the works of a number of contemporary composers, in particular Sidelnikov, Gubaidulina and Schnittke.
The Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra currently ranks among the finest symphonic ensembles in Russia, but its creative activities are not limited to its home territory: the orchestra receives frequent invitations to perform in many other countries all over the world. The orchestra has enjoyed very successful tours to the USA, Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Croatia.
Critics have commented on the strict discipline of the ensemble, its flexibility of phrasing, the warmth of timbre, as well as the subtlety of nuance evident in its performances. Reviews have also remarked upon the close creative unity and mutual understanding between orchestra and conductor which makes it possible to realize some sophisticated artistic concepts.
