Marcel Reijans Tenor

Full Biography

 

Dutch tenor Marcel Reijans began vocal studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1990 and from 1994 to 1996 he studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

Marcel has performed in diverse festivals ranging from Aix-en-Provence and Tanglewood to the BBC Proms. He has worked with conductors such as Barenboim, de Billy, Bychkov, Chailly, Eschenbach, Gergiev, Haenchen, Jacobs, Ozawa, Rattle, de Waart and van Zweden and has sung with among others the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

On the operatic stage Marcel’s Mozart repertoire includes Ferrando/Così fan tutte (Hamburgische Staatsoper, Semperoper Dresden, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden), Don Ottavio/Don Giovanni (Liceu Barcelona, New York City Opera, De Nederlandse Opera) and Tamino/Die Zauberflöte (Liceu Barcelona, Boston Lyric Opera, Opéra National de Lyon, Nationale Reisopera). CD recordings include Agenore/Il re pastore and the title role in Mitridate, rè di Ponto.

Marcel’s wide operatic repertoire includes Tom Rakewell/The Rake's Progress (Nationale Reisopera), Fenton/Falstaff (Hamburgische Staatsoper), Chevalier de la Force/Dialogues des Carmélites (De Nederlandse Opera), Anatol/Vanessa (Palermo, Italy), Walther von der Vogelweide/Tannhäuser (De Nederlandse Opera and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden), Narraboth/Salome (Opéra National de Montpellier, Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Festival), Hylas/Les Troyens (De Nederlandse Opera and Grand Théâtre de Genève), Andres/Wozzeck (La Monnaie, Brussels) and Paris/King Priam (Nationale Reisopera).

Marcel maintains an active concert career and has sung performances of Elijah and St Paul (Mendelssohn), Christmas Oratorio (Bach), Messiah and La Resurrezione (Händel), the arias from St John and St Matthew Passion (Bach), Ninth Symphony and Mass in C major (Beethoven), Requiem and Coronation Mass (Mozart), The Seasons (Haydn), Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (Britten), Faust Symphony (Liszt), Der König Kandaules (Zemlinsky) and La Damnation de Faust (Berlioz).

The 2008/09 season included performances at the Liceu, Barcelona for the role of Nando in Tiefland and in the Holland Festival with De Nederlandse Opera as Le Remendado in Carmen. In addition Marcel gave concerts with the Holland Symfonia Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Het Brabants Orkest, RTVE Orchestra in Madrid and was guest in the ZaterdagMatinee in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, where he performed in Die Meistersinger and in Orlando Paladino (title role).

This season Marcel returns to De Nederlandse Opera as Narraboth/Salome and Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro as well as engagements with the Hamburg State Opera (Matteo/Arabella), Opéra National de Paris (Froh/Das Rheingold) and La Monnaie Brussels (Le Prince Philippe/Yvonne, Princesse de Bourgogne).

Symphonic highlights include St John Passion with the Het Brabants Orkest and several concerts in the Netherlands.
