Marco Caria Baritone

Marco Caria is one of Italy’s most exciting young baritones to have emerged in recent years. He graduated from the Conservatorio di Sassari where he earned a scholarship to further his vocal studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He has won several international competitions including the Tito Gobbi Competition in 2004 (special award of the jury) and the Luciano Neroni Competition in 2005. Since 2005 Mr. Caria has pursued advanced vocal studies with famed Italian soprano Mirella Freni.

Mr. Caria made his North American debut in May 2008 in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino conducted by Maestro James Conlon. During the 2008-09 season he appeared twice at La Fenice Venice – first for Pagliacci and then for Maria Stuarda. He then returned to the US for his operatic stage debut with the Cincinnati Opera Summer Festival in Verdi’s Don Carlo. Highlights of Mr. Caria’s 2009-10 season include Maria Padilla at the Wexford Festival Opera, Maria Stuarda at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, I Puritani at Teatro Lirico Cagliari and La Boheme at the Cincinnati Opera.

In November 2005 Mr. Caria received the special award at Padova’s 20th International Vocal Competition “Iris Adami Corradetti”. Subsequently, he won the prestigious “Nicolai Ghiaurov” scholarship prize. In January 2008, he won the Emmerich Smola Award of the German city of Landau. Awarded by the music editors of the SWR Baden-Baden, the Emmerich Smola Award is one of Germany’s most prestigious music awards. Only those who have won a major international music competition are considered for the prize. Mr. Caria qualified by having won two prizes at Placido Domingo's international competition “Operalia” in July 2007 – one the top prize awarded by public vote.

Sardinian by birth, Mr. Caria makes his home in Rome, Italy.
