Evan Rogister Conductor

The young American conductor Evan Rogister began his two-year tenure as the principal assistant conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin under its newly appointed general music director, Donald Runnicles, in August of 2009. He will make multiple appearances there as guest conductor, with repertoire to include Die Zauberflöte, La bohème, Rienzi, and Manon Lescaut.

Last season, Rogister- a dual citizen of Germany and the US - made his Seattle Opera debut to great critical acclaim conducting the renowned Robert Lepage production of Bluebeard’s Castle/Erwartung, about which the Seattle Post Intelligencer, said he “…made the orchestra sound like another -- electrifying with total attention to detail. He had the idiom of [Bartok and Schoenberg] in hand.” Other orchestral engagements in the recent past include debuts with the Prague Chamber Symphony Orchestra and the Bochum Symphony; next season in addition to multiple performances at the Deutsche Oper, he guest conducts the Prague Radio Symphony.

Evan Rogister received a bachelor of music degree at Indiana University where he first enrolled as a trombone major, switching to vocal studies under famed bass Giorgio Tozzi. He became interested in conducting during graduate studies in voice at the Juilliard School, and the school sent him to Paris for training at the National Conservatory. He then studied conducting with Gustav Meier at the Peabody Conservatory. In 2005, he attended an international conducting festival in Sofia, Bulgaria , where he encountered conductor Rossen Milanov, Music Director of the Haddonfield Symphony, who invited him to become Assistant Conductor. In 2006 the Houston Grand Opera and Patrick Summers created a conducting fellowship especially for him. In Houston, Mr. Rogister stepped in at short notice to lead performances of Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, making his house debut; his scheduled HGO debut was in the 2007-2008 season, leading performances of La bohème.

Evan Rogister was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, and currently resides in Berlin.
