The young American conductor Evan Rogister began his a two-year tenure as the principal assistant conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin under its newly appointed general music director, Donald Runnicles, in August of 2009. He will make multiple appearances there as guest conductor, with repertoire to include Die Zauberflöte, La boheme, and Manon Lescaut.
In the 2008/2009 season, Rogister- a dual citizen of Germany and the US - made his Seattle Opera debut to great critical acclaim conducting the renowned Robert Lepage production of Bluebeard's Castle/Erwartung, about which the Seattle Post Intelligencer, said he "…made the orchestra sound like another -- electrifying with total attention to detail. He had the idiom of [Bartok and Schoenberg] in hand." Other orchestral engagements in the recent past include his debut with the Prague Chamber Symphony Orchestra, in which he lead a concert of concertos and overtures at the Dvořák Hall in Prague, and his debut as a guest conductor with the Bochum Symphoniker.
Evan Rogister received a bachelor of music degree at Indiana University where he first enrolled as a trombone major, switching to vocal studies under famed bass Giorgio Tozzi. Before earning his master of music degree at the Juilliard School, he became interested in conducting, and the school sent him to Paris for training at the National Conservatory. He then studied conducting with Gustav Meier at the Peabody Conservatory. In 2005, he attended an international conducting festival in Sofia, Bulgaria , where his talent was noted by conductor Rossen Milanov, Music Director of the Haddonfield (Pennsylvania) Symphony; shortly thereafter he was appointed Assistant Conductor. In 2006 he was invited to become the Conducting Fellow at Houston Grand Opera, a position created especially for him. At Houston Grand Opera, Mr. Rogister stepped in at short notice to lead performances of Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, making his house debut; his scheduled HGO debut was in the 2007-2008 season, leading performances of La bohème.
